Oscar-winning actor and producer Morgan Freeman recently spent several days vacationing in Costa Rica, marking his third visit to the country in less than a year, according to immigration records.

Freeman, 87, arrived Jan. 13 at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste, and departed Jan. 17, records from Costa Rica’s General Directorate of Migration show.

During his stay, fans shared photos on social media showing the legendary actor visiting various tourist destinations throughout Guanacaste.

Costa Rican sculptor Sandra Rubinstein also posted photos with Freeman after he purchased one of her artworks. Rubinstein told local media that Freeman reviewed her sculpture portfolio and was particularly drawn to a piece inspired by female determination. He purchased the sculpture, named it “Didi,” and said he planned to place it in a prominent spot in his home.

Freeman also received a special gift from Cacao Cartel, a Costa Rican chocolate shop. Rachel Leiderman, the shop’s owner, told local media that the actor was presented with chocolates made from pure Costa Rican cacao, including pieces crafted in various shapes. One chocolate was molded in the shape of an Oscar statuette.

“He is an extremely nice person,” Leiderman said. “With all his accomplishments, he told me he had never received a chocolate trophy, so it was very exciting to be able to give him something different.”

The visit continues a pattern of frequent travel to Costa Rica by Freeman. He vacationed in Guanacaste in February 2025.

The iconic actor also spent the December 2024 holidays in the country, visiting several beaches and restaurants in the same province.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1937, Freeman is widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has earned numerous honors, including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award, as well as a Tony Award nomination.

His accolades also include the Kennedy Center Honor, the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award, the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award.

Freeman is among many celebrities who have chosen Costa Rica as a vacation destination. In January, American actor and director Justin Baldoni celebrated his birthday while vacationing in the country with his family.

American designer and television host David Bromstad recently traveled to the country to film a new episode of HGTV’s My Lottery Dream Home.

Early January, NBA star Michael Jordan made his fourth trip to Costa Rica within a year.

Tourism remains one of Costa Rica’s strongest industries. In 2025, the country welcomed more than 2.6 million tourists arriving by air.

In 2024, the tourism sector generated more than $5.4 billion in foreign exchange earnings.
