Costa
Rica welcomed over 2.6 million tourists by
air in 2024, a 7% increase compared to
2023, according to the Costa Rican Tourism
Institute (ICT). The
Juan Santamaría International Airport
(SJO) in Alajuela reported over 1.7
million passengers, marking a 4% rise from
the previous year.
Meanwhile,
the Daniel Oduber International Airport
(LIR) in Guanacaste handled more than
881,000 tourists, a 14% increase year over
year. The
United States remains the top source of
visitors, with approximately 1.5 million
Americans traveling to Costa Rica, a 10%
increase from 2023.
Canadian
tourists also grew by 6%, totaling over
257,000.
Mexican
visitors rose by 12%, exceeding 92,000. European
arrivals surpassed 428,000, with Germany
(73,000), France (70,000), the United
Kingdom (66,000) and Spain (51,000)
leading the way.
The
country's
appeal continues to draw high-profile
visitors. NBA
legend Michael Jordan, 61, was recently
spotted vacationing in Costa Rica
earlier this month.
To
sustain growth, ICT
has launched international advertising
campaigns and participated in global
tourism events like the
IBTM World Fair in Barcelona, Spain.
Costa
Rica is also improving its infrastructure. Automated
border control systems, known as eGates,
are set to debut at SJO International
Airport.
Tourism
remains a cornerstone of Costa Rica's
economy, generating $5 billion in revenue
in 2024, according to the Central Bank of
Costa Rica.
The
sector accounted for more than 2.4
million visitors in 2023.
The
Costa Rican Tourism Institute, or ICT, is
the government agency responsible for
promoting tourism in Costa Rica.
