The Tourism Institute reported a new tourism record reached in 2023, with more than 2,471,000 travelers visiting the country by air.

That figure shows more than 121,000 tourists compared with the 2,350,000 visitors who entered in 2022.

In addition, more than 53,000 visitors set a new record, surpassing the 2,418.000 tourists reported in 2019, the year before the covid-19 pandemic.

The United States continues to be the leading nationality visiting Costa Rica. Authorities documented more than 1,431,000 tourists from the U.S., which is equivalent to 58% of the total number of visitors.

More than 242,000 Canadian tourists visited the country, which is over 71,000 more tourists compared to the 171,000 travelers in 2022.

Authorities registered more than 431,000 European tourists. Of these, the majority came from France (13.4%) and Germany (13.1%).

The figures demonstrate that the country regained the tourist industry, which was one of the most damaged by the 2020 covid pandemic.

The institute has launched many international advertising campaigns encouraging tourism to Costa Rica. This week, authorities announced that the country will take part in a series of adventure tourism fairs, to boost visitors from the United States and Canada.
