More than 198,000 Canadian tourists arrived at the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) in Liberia Canton, Guanacaste Province, as of October.

According to Coriport, the firm in charge of airport management, this statistic reflects an increase of 81,000 Canadian tourists (about 70%) over the number of visitors who arrived during the same period last year, when they reported around 117,000.

Four Canadian airlines, including Air Canada, Air Transat, Sunwing, and WestJet, operate flights between Canada and Guanacaste.

Tourists arrived from a variety of Canadian cities, including Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary.

"The increase in Canadian tourism has broken records and consolidated Guanacaste as a preferred destination in Canada," César Jaramillo, General Manager of Guanacaste Airport, stated.

One of many Costa Rica's strategies to increase tourism was an agreement with the Canadian entertainment company Cirque du Soleil, making Costa Rica the official tourism partner of their newest ECHO's U.S. tour.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica. As of Sept., there were over 1.8 million tourists.

Last year, about 2.3 million tourists visited Costa Rica. That is one million more visitors than in 2021.
