Costa Rica will take part in a series of adventure tourism fairs, to boost visitors from the United States and Canada.

According to the Tourism Institute, government authorities are working along with representatives of different tourist firms to market the country as a destination of adventure tourism in seven fairs that will take place between January and March.

The adventure tourism fairs will be held in locations like Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Dallas in the United States. While in Canada, expos will be held in Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary.

The goal is to position Costa Rica as a regional leader in adventure tourist activities such as canopy, surfing, hiking, rafting, horseback riding, snorkeling, diving and kayaking among others.

According to William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism, these countries account for more than 70% of Costa Rica's annual tourism arrivals.

The institute's statistics show between January and November 2023, 1.2 million U.S. citizens traveled to Costa Rica by air. While over 200,000 Canadian visitors arrived by air over the same period.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica. As of Sept. 2023, there were over 1.8 million tourists.

In 2022, about 2.3 million tourists visited the country. That is one million more visitors than in 2021.
