Automated border control systems, known as eGates, will be installed for the first time at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province, Aeris Holdings, the Brazilian firm managing the airport, announced.

eGates are self-service barriers that use biometric data, such as unique physical characteristics like facial features or fingerprints stored in passport chips, combined with facial recognition or fingerprint scans, to verify a traveler’s identity. The process takes less than a minute per traveler, potentially reducing wait times at immigration checkpoints.

If a passport
holder’s identity cannot be verified or the system malfunctions, the eGate will not open, and an immigration officer will assist the traveler.

Aeris plans to gradually implement the eGates starting in July 2025. Initially, four eGates will be installed and available for Costa Rican citizens and residents with Dimex IDs.

Over time, the system will expand to include travelers from other countries, such as the United States and European nations, with biometric passports, according to Ricardo Hernández of Aeris.

The eGates will be funded through a $0.14 technical fee per departing passenger, which will cover installation and maintenance costs.

SJO is Costa Rica’s busiest airport, serving approximately 4.3 million passengers, tourists and residents, as of August 2024.

The airport operates with 25 international airlines connecting to 37 destinations worldwide and offers amenities such as free Wi-Fi, pet-friendly areas, charging stations, self-check-in kiosks, restaurants, souvenir shops, luggage wrapping services, duty-free shopping, and VIP lounges.

Tourism remains a vital sector of Costa Rica’s economy. By July 2024, more than 1.7 million tourists had arrived via air, marking a 13.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The country set a new tourism record in 2023, welcoming over 2.4 million travelers.
