Costa Rican sprinter Sherman Güity-Güity claimed a silver medal in a tightly contested 200-meter final at the World Para Athletics Championships held in New Delhi, India.

The 12th edition of the championships brought together 73 para-athletes from around the world, 54 men and 19 women, competing across multiple classifications.

Güity competed in the T64 category, designated for athletes with leg amputations who participate in sprint events.

This marks his second medal of the championship. Last week, he captured bronze in the 100 meters with a strong 10.93-second finish.

In the 200-meter race, Güity crossed the line in an impressive 21.70 seconds, according to the Sports Institute (ICODER).

Germany’s Felix Streng took gold with 21.60 seconds, while Italy’s Francesco Loragno claimed bronze in 22.56 seconds, finishing just behind the Costa Rican sprinter.

“Today I finished second in the 200m. I’ve always been used to winning, but this time the result has a special meaning,” Güity said after the medal ceremony. “It wasn’t easy to reach this final. I had to fight hard to be here. That’s why this means more than just a medal. I’m proud to have given my all and to stand on this podium.”

Güity’s performance adds to an already remarkable career. In May, he captured two gold medals at the Cali Para Athletics Grand Prix in Colombia.

In 2024, he made history by becoming the first Costa Rican to win two gold medals at the Paris Paralympic Games.

His medal collection also includes two golds from the 2023 Para Athletics Grand Prix in the United Arab Emirates, as well as a first-place world ranking at the 2022 Grand Prix in Mexico.

Güity’s success story is one of resilience. Born in Limón Province on December 3, 1996, he began competing in track events at Costa Rica’s National Sports Games at a young age.

In August 2017, a car accident resulted in the loss of part of his left leg. Nevertheless, through determination and hard work, he returned to athletics during his recovery, ultimately rising to become one of the world’s top para sprinters.

Today, he specializes in the 100- and 200-meter sprint events.
