Costa Rican sprinter Sherman Güity-Güity claimed the bronze medal in a fiercely contested 100-meter final at the World Para Athletics Championships this week in New Delhi, India.

The 12th edition of the Championships began on September 27 and will run through October 5 in India’s capital. The event features a 73-member contingent of international para-athletes, including 54 men and 19 women.

Güity competed in the T64 classification, which is for athletes with leg amputations who participate in sprint events. Representing Costa Rica, he finished the race in an impressive 10.93 seconds, running from lane six, according to the Sports Institute (ICODER).

Germany’s Felix Streng took gold with a time of 10.73 seconds, while his teammate Johannes Floors earned silver, crossing the finish line at 10.75 seconds, just ahead of Güity.

“I finished the 100 meters, and I placed third. It’s a great achievement for me because the 100 was a very tough event, one small mistake and it’s over,” Güity said after receiving his medal. “I’m super happy with third, and now I’m preparing for the 200 meters. I hope to take gold in that race.”

Güity’s next event is the 200-meter T64 preliminary qualification race on Saturday, October 4. If he advances, he will compete in the final on Sunday, October 5.

Güity has an impressive track record. He recently earned two gold medals at the Cali Para Athletics Grand Prix in Cali, Colombia.

Born on December 3, 1996, in Costa Rica’s Limón Province, Güity showed early talent in track events at the National Sports Games. His career faced a major challenge in August 2017 when a car accident led to the partial amputation of his left leg. Despite this setback, he remained dedicated to athletics throughout his recovery.

Today, Güity specializes in the 100 and 200-meter races for athletes with disabilities and continues to embody perseverance and excellence.

His victory adds to Costa Rica’s growing presence on the international sports stage. Recently, Costa Rican surfer Leilani McGonagle achieved a historic win at the Super Girl Surf Pro, a World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series 4,000 event at Oceanside Beach, California.
