U.S.-based Prent Corporation, a manufacturer of custom rigid thermoformed plastic packaging, has begun construction of a new manufacturing facility in the Zeta Industrial Zone in Heredia Province, the company announced.

Headquartered in Janesville, Wisconsin, Prent said the expansion is expected to double its production capacity in Costa Rica and strengthen its role in the country's growing medical device industry.

The new 4,500-square-meter facility will house six advanced thermoforming machines and include a new production line capable of manufacturing trays up to 72 inches long.

The project also includes expanded storage space and a Class 7 cleanroom designed to meet the strict environmental control standards required for medical packaging production.

"This new facility reflects our strong commitment to our Costa Rican community, our collaborators and the customers we serve," said Wilfredo Mercado, Prent Corporation's senior vice president of manufacturing. "We're proud to contribute to the country's growing business landscape by staying close to our customers and deepening the strategic partnerships that drive shared success."

The company said the expansion will create new jobs in both specialized and operational positions. Recruitment is expected to begin three to four months before the facility opens, which is scheduled for mid-2027. Open positions will be posted on the company's careers website.

Prent Corporation established operations in Costa Rica in 2014 and has since become an important supplier to the country's medical device industry.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX) said the continued expansion of the nation's medical device sector is attracting investment beyond manufacturing operations alone. The industry now includes more than 100 companies, including 13 of the world's 25 largest medical device manufacturers, and generates more than 63,000 direct jobs.

Prent joins a growing list of international companies expanding their presence in Costa Rica. Most recently, Swedish retailer IKEA announced it has begun recruiting employees as part of its plans to open stores in the country.

In April, Intego Clinical, headquartered in Maitland, Florida, U.S., the clinical research division of Intego Group, announced it is hiring as part of an expansion of its facilities in San José.

COMEX is the government agency responsible for overseeing Costa Rica’s foreign trade and investment strategy.
