Porter
Airlines, a Canadian carrier based at Billy
Bishop Toronto City Airport, has launched
international service to Costa Rica, marking
a milestone for the country as Porter
selected it as its first destination in
Central America.
The
inaugural flight, operated with Porter’s
Embraer E195-E2 aircraft carrying 132
passengers, arrived Friday at 1:40 p.m. from
Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
in Mississauga, Ontario, to Daniel
Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR)
in Guanacaste.
According to the Tourism Institute (ICT), Porter will launch a second route to Costa Rica on Dec. 17, offering service from Ottawa/Macdonald–Cartier International Airport to LIR with another flight carrying more than 130 passengers.
Porter Airlines
announced in June that it would
begin operations between Canada and
Costa Rica, connecting
travelers from Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal to Juan
Santamaría International (SJO) Airport
in Alajuela and to the Guanacaste airport. Additional booking
details and schedule updates are
available on Porter Airlines’ website. With its
expansion, Porter joins a growing number
of international carriers increasing
their presence in Costa Rica. Recently, Viva
Aerobus, a Mexican low-cost airline
based in Monterrey, announced four
new nonstop routes between Mexico
and Costa Rica.
As
of September 2025, more than 2.2 million
travelers arrived in Costa Rica by air
overall.
The
sector also generated more than $5.4
billion in foreign exchange earnings in
2024.
ICT is the government agency responsible for promoting tourism and investing in infrastructure improvements.
