A new police station has opened in Santa Teresa Beach, Cóbano District of Puntarenas Province, bringing 16 Tourist Police officers to strengthen security in this popular beach destination, the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) announced.

The two-story facility, covering 377 square meters (about 4,057 square feet), cost $760,000 to build. Funding came from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), while the MSP will cover staffing, equipment, weapons, furniture, and maintenance.

The station features a reception area, restrooms, separate dormitories for male and female officers, offices, storage rooms, and landscaped green areas.

Officers based there will patrol not only Santa Teresa Beach, but also nearby Malpaís and Manzanillo. The MSP said the new post addresses both safety concerns and the needs of residents, businesses, and tourists in the area.

“This new police station will not only strengthen security in a high-tourism area, it also represents a concrete response to the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors,” the MSP said in a statement.

The Cóbano facility is part of a broader ICT–MSP agreement to expand Tourist Police coverage in key travel destinations. Another new station recently opened at Cahuita Beach in Limón Province.

Costa Rica’s Tourist Police, a specialized unit of more than 300 officers, patrol the country’s most visited sites and hold the same authority as regular police.

The MSP oversees national law enforcement, public order, and crime prevention.

The ICT is the government agency in charge of promoting tourism and supporting related infrastructure projects.
