Costa Rica, represented by the Tourism Institute, attended the Hotel Opportunities Latin America Summit (HOLA) to attract new hotel brands to begin operations in the country.

According to the institute, the summit, which took place this week in Miami, Florida, United States, is the main event in the Latin American hotel investment business since it presents the world's most prominent hotel brands.

"Beating the record for attracting foreign direct investment in 2023 pushes us to be more competitive to attracting new investment projects for the country," the organization stated.

Costa Rica, with its natural and cultural riches, has a great potential to do business for new hotels. More hotels, eventually will increase investment and employment opportunities in towns outside of the Greater Metropolitan Area which is the area made up of cities on the outskirts of San José such as Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago, authorities added.

During the event, the Costa Rican Chambers of Hotels and Tourism officials attended meetings with hotel representatives to highlight Costa Rica's advantages, success in tourism infrastructure development and favorable visitor experiences.

Currently, 19 new hotels are under construction in the country, including boutique hotels, multinational chain brands and luxury hotels. Authorities expect that these hotels will open between 2024 and 2025.

The institute's figures show that between January and March, an approximate investment of $547 million was made in building new hotels in the provinces of Guanacaste, Heredia, San José, Puntarenas, and Limón. These new hotels will provide 1,200 new rooms for travelers.

Furthermore, authorities believe the new hotels would create jobs for around 2,600 individuals in those provinces.

One of the new hotels is the Ritz-Carlton Hotel brand's Nekajui Resort, which will open in November 2024 on the Papagayo Peninsula in Guanacaste Province.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica.  Over 800,000 tourists arrived in the country via air between January and March of this year, representing a 16.8% rise over the same period in 2023.

The tourism authorities have launched many international advertising campaigns encouraging visitors to Costa Rica. Recently, Costa Rica was attracting more Canadian visitors with an advertisement campaign in Canada.

Also, the average spending of tourists who visited Costa Rica in 2023 increased by $300 from 2022, according to authorities.

The country reported a new tourism record reached in 2023, with more than 2,4 million travelers.
