Approximately 884,000 tourists arrived in the country via air between January and March of this year, representing a 16.8% rise over the same period in 2023, according to the Tourism Institute.

The Juan Santamarķa International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province welcomed approximately 565,000 travelers, representing an 11% increase over the same time in 2023.

Officials at the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) in Guanacaste Province reported the arrival of over 318,000 tourists, a 28% increase over the previous year.

The United States remains the most popular nationality visiting Costa Rica. Authorities reported around 511,000 tourists, accounting for 57% of the total number of visitors and representing a 23% rise over the same period in 2023.

Furthermore, nearly 120,000 Canadians, representing a 10% rise. More than 21,000 Mexicans, representing a 33% increase in visitors in 2024.





In addition, officials had recorded almost 157,000 European tourists. Of them, the bulk came from Spain (14%), the Netherlands (11%) the United Kingdom (11%), Germany (11%), and France (11%) among others.

The institute has launched many international advertising campaigns encouraging visitors to Costa RicaRecently, Costa Rica was attracting more Canadian visitors with an advertisement campaign in Ontario, Canada.

The average spending of tourists who visited Costa Rica in 2023 increased by $300 from 2022, according to authorities.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa RicaThe country reported a new tourism record reached in 2023, with more than 2,4 million travelers.
