A male Canadian citizen surnamed Plasseraud-Thomas (41) was deported to Canada on Friday, announced the Ministry of Public Security.

According to the International Police (Interpol) statement, Plasseraud was taken into custody on December 1, 2023, at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province, while he was arriving in Costa Rica on an international flight.

He had an international arrest warrant for violent assault and evaded a prison sentence, authorities added.

After his arrest, Plasseraud was transferred to the Immigration Apprehension Center in San José, where he remained for the extradition procedure to be completed on Friday.

This is one of many cases of foreign citizens arrested in Costa Rica.  Last week, Interpol arrested a male U.S. citizen, surnamed Oria (67) who has been sought on an international warrant as a suspect in a $400 million fraud.

As of April 2024, Costa Rica has deported 350 foreign people, according to statistics from the General Directorate of Migration.

Last year closed with almost 1,000 foreigners deported, according to statistics from Migration. This figure is a 47% increase over the 664 individuals deported in 2022.

In February 2024, Costa Rica inaugurated the new General Border Control Center headquarters in Paso Canoas Canton in Puntarenas Province.
