The country closes 2023 by deporting 977 people, according to statistics from the General Directorate of Migration.

This figure is a 47% increase over the 664 individuals deported in 2022.

People were deported for committing crimes in Costa Rica or in their home countries. Furthermore, others were expelled from the country because their tourist visas had been canceled or because they had criminal records and were deemed hazardous, jeopardizing the country's security, according to Enrique Arguedas, Director of the Migration Police.

The overall number of deportees last year included 825 Nicaraguans, 44 Colombians, 18 Salvadorans and 16 Hondurans.

"National security and immigration control is the commitment of the national immigration police," Arguedas added. "We will continue to carry out operational actions to verify the immigration status of foreigners and to deport those who have already exceeded the time limit allowed."
