As of April
2024, Costa Rica has deported 350
foreign people, according to statistics
from the General Directorate of
Migration. Of those
deported, 323 were Nicaraguans, five
Ecuadorians, five U.S citizens,
four Panamanians, four Venezuelans,
three Colombians, two Jamaicans, two
Salvadorans, one Mexican, and one
Dominican Republic resident. These
people were
deported for
committing crimes either in Costa Rica
or in their homeland, their tourist
visa was revoked or
because they had criminal records
that were
considered dangerous,
putting the security of the country at
risk. These
figures show an increase compared with
the same period of 2023 when
325 people were
deported. Deportations are implemented by the Professional Migration Police. "National security and immigration control is the commitment of the national immigration police," said Enrique Arguedas, director of the Immigration Police. "We will continue to carry out operational actions to verify the immigration status of foreigners and to deport those who have already exceeded the time limit allowed."
When
foreign people are
deported from
Costa Rica, it will be difficult for them to
re-enter. The government sets periods
of inadmissibility ranging from 5
years to a lifelong ban. Last year closed
with 977 foreigners deported,
according to statistics from
Migration. This
figure is a 47% increase over the 664
individuals deported in 2022.
