India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the opening of the country’s first embassy in Costa Rica, marking a new step in diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.

Until now, India had maintained only honorary consular offices in Costa Rica.

The embassy is located in the Lexus Tower building in Escazú, San José, and will be led by Ambassador Pabitra Margherita. In addition to serving Costa Rica, the embassy will also oversee consular matters involving Indian citizens living in Nicaragua.

Officials have not yet announced the date when the embassy will formally begin operations.

“The mission of the Embassy of India in San José is to foster a robust strategic partnership between India and Costa Rica, managing bilateral, political, economic and scientific relations,” authorities said. “It serves to advance national interests, facilitate trade and investment, promote cultural interaction, and provide consular services to Indian citizens in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.”

Margherita also announced the expansion of operations in Costa Rica by Feuji, a technology services company located in the Ultrapark Trade Zone in Heredia province.

The company, which also operates in Dallas, Texas, provides services in cloud-managed services, product engineering, cybersecurity and managed security services, low-code/no-code application development, and strategic staffing.

According to Costa Rica’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, bilateral trade between the two countries totals approximately $300 million annually. Officials also estimate that about 2,500 Costa Ricans work for Indian companies operating in Costa Rica in sectors including textiles, manufacturing, industry and high-value knowledge services.

Authorities said they expect the opening of the embassy to encourage additional Indian companies to establish operations in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica has continued to attract foreign investment in recent years, although employment challenges remain. According to the National Employment Survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), the unemployment rate stood at 7.1% between January and March 2026, leaving more than 164,000 people unemployed. Men represented approximately 56% of that total, or about 92,000 individuals.

Feuji is one of several international companies expanding operations in Costa Rica. Recently, Intego Clinical, headquartered in Maitland, Florida, announced plans to hire additional employees as part of an expansion in San José province.
