Freudenberg
Medical, a German global contract design and
manufacturing (CDMO) partner for the medical
device and biopharma industries, has
inaugurated its second production facility
in the
Coyol Free Zone in
Alajuela Province.
The
new site represents a $25 million investment
aimed at strengthening the company’s
presence in Latin America, according to
Freudenberg Medical.
“Costa
Rica has become a cornerstone of our global
operations over the past decade,” said
Michael McGee, CEO of Freudenberg Medical.
“With this new facility, we are expanding
our capability to deliver high-quality,
cost-effective medical technology solutions
on a large scale, while staying close to our
customers and supporting their long-term
growth.”
The 50,000-square-foot facility is Freudenberg’s second site in Costa Rica. It focuses on assembling high-volume, minimally invasive catheters for electrophysiology, vascular, and structural heart therapies, as well as other precision medical devices that require manual assembly.
Three
cleanrooms are operational from the start,
with plans to double the site’s size to
100,000 square feet within three years, the
company said. The expansion will quadruple
Freudenberg Medical’s total footprint in the
country.
Freudenberg
also plans to increase its local workforce
from 350 to more than 900 employees over the
next three years, adding positions in supply
chain, procurement, and logistics. Job
seekers can apply through the
company’s careers website.
While
international firms continue to invest and
hire in Costa Rica, employment challenges
remain. According to the National Employment
Survey (INEC), the unemployment rate stood
at 6% between June and August 2025, leaving
more than 137,000 people jobless. Men
accounted for about 55% of that total, or
roughly 76,000 individuals.
Freudenberg
Medical joins other multinational companies
expanding operations in Costa Rica. Recently,
Boston Scientific, a Massachusetts-based
medical device manufacturer, announced
the opening of a new global hub in
Heredia Province.
