Costa Rica’s national team brought home more than 260 medals from the 12th Central American Games, held in Guatemala, the Costa Rican Olympic Committee announced. The regional competition gathered about 3,450 athletes from across Central America, competing in 42 sports at venues throughout the host country. After two weeks of events, Costa Rican athletes captured 78 gold, 93 silver, and 95 bronze medals, for a total of 266, finishing second overall behind Guatemala.
Costa
Rica’s medals came across a wide range of
disciplines, including weightlifting,
men’s water polo, chess, handball,
volleyball, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer,
women’s rugby, basketball, swimming, and
baseball, among others. The
team’s performance underscores Costa
Rica’s growing presence on the
international sports stage. Recently, sprinter
Sherman Güity-Güity added to that
momentum by earning two medals at the
World Para Athletics Championships in
New Delhi, India.
