Route 32, the main highway
linking the capital to the Caribbean
Coast (province of Limón), is now open to
traffic around the clock, the Ministry
of Public Works and Transportation
(MOPT) announced. The corridor, a
critical route for tourism and
commercial transport, is now open to all
vehicles without time restrictions after
road safety teams determined the risk of
landslides had decreased. Officials warned,
however, that the highway could close
again if weather conditions worsen or
new landslide threats arise. MOPT said
real-time updates will be posted on its
official social media channels.
Route 32 had been
closed for nearly two weeks, from Nov. 3
to 16, due to the threat of a massive
rock near kilometer 31. The rock, more
than 7 meters tall and weighing more than 2 tons, was
lodged in unstable soil weakened by
heavy rainfall and posed a significant
safety hazard. The Route 32
operation is part of Costa Rica’s
broader efforts to improve road safety.
Recently,
authorities announced the
construction of a new $2 million
dock at San Lucas Island National
Park, located off the Pacific Coast
in the Gulf of Nicoya. MOPT is the
government agency responsible for
overseeing Costa Rica’s roads, ports,
airports, and public transportation
systems.
