The
Ministry of Public Works and
Transportation (MOPT) announced that Route
32,
the main highway linking the provinces of
San José and Limón, will be closed to
traffic throughout the weekend for safety
reasons.
The
ministry said the preventive closure is
intended to avoid accidents while crews
carry out maintenance work along the
roadway.
MOPT
teams plan to remove a massive rock
measuring more than seven meters high and
weighing over two tons near kilometer 31.
The rock sits on unstable ground that has
softened due to heavy rains, posing a
serious risk to drivers.
The operation will include controlled dynamite blasts, followed by cleanup work to clear debris from the highway.
Drivers are
advised to use alternate routes,
including Route 10 through Turrialba Canton (Cartago
Province) and on to Siquirres Canton (Heredia
Province), before reconnecting with
Route 32 toward Limón.
Authorities expect
to reopen Route 32 on Monday once the
rock removal work is complete. Updates
will be posted on MOPT’s official social media channels.
The effort is one
of the largest recent road safety and
landslide prevention projects undertaken
by the ministry. Earlier this week,
MOPT reopened a section of Route 34
between Jacó and Hermosa beaches in
Puntarenas Province after clearing a
major landslide.
MOPT is the
government agency responsible for
overseeing Costa Rica’s roads, ports,
airports, and public transportation
systems.
