A section of Route 34 between
Jacó and Hermosa beaches in Puntarenas Province, has reopened to traffic after being blocked by a landslide, the Garabito Municipality announced.

Authorities stated that the slide, which sent rocks and soil onto the roadway last week, forced the closure of part of the route. Traffic police from the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) managed vehicle flow while crews cleared one lane.

The partial closure caused heavy traffic delays on the busy stretch, which connects two of the Central Pacific’s most popular beach destinations.

Over the weekend, MOPT crews finished clearing debris and repairing the damaged section. The municipality confirmed in a statement that Route 34 is now fully open to two-way traffic.

However, authorities warned that if heavy rain continues in the area, the risk of additional landslides could increase. Updates on the road’s condition will be posted on the social media accounts of
the municipality and the MOPT.

Meanwhile, MOPT continues structural repair work on the Tárcoles River Bridge, better known as the Crocodile Bridge, also along Route 34.

The bridge, a well-known tourist stop where visitors gather to watch dozens of crocodiles sunbathing below, has long been a regional landmark and a major attraction for crocodile-watching tours.

Officials said crews have made significant progress in reinforcing the bridge’s foundations to improve safety and traffic flow.

MOPT is the government agency responsible for overseeing Costa Rica’s roads, ports, airports, and public transportation systems.
