inaugurate $140 million-plus
new Congressional building By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Monday the deputies started their sessions in the new Congressional building, budgeted at approximately $140,950,570. Since 2012, the General Comptroller's authorized a trust agreement with the Banco de Costa Rica, BCR, for the construction of this new headquarters for Congress. The new building was built 60 years after the first headquarters, located in the Cuesta-Moras District, was inaugurated. Since 1958, the old building has been used by deputies, although it was designed to be the Presidential House. The new building for Congress has 21 floors, measuring 51,000 square meters. There’s offices for each deputy, a wide area for sessions and an additional area for 200 session spectators. In addition to a large bar press. It also includes extra rooms for other activities for deputies, plus administration offices. There is a green garden located in the center with four pre-Columbian spheres and an open airflow system. The building has concrete walls that will keep the temperature level cool without the need for air conditioners, which means it saves energy, Congress said in a statement. The modern Congressional building includes solar panels and a rainwater collection system that will be used to irrigate the gardens and for the restrooms. According to Eduardo Cruickshank, president of Congress, with the new building, a new history will be written in the process of the formation of laws, to strengthen Costa Rican democracy.
