U.S. citizens living in Costa Rica joined in solemn observance of Memorial Day, a national holiday honoring the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

On Sunday, the Marine Corps League Costa Rica and the American Legion co-hosted a Memorial Day ceremony at Hope Cemetery Field in Escazú canton, San José.

Veterans marked the occasion with the traditional Scarlet Rose Ceremony, reading the names of the fallen and placing roses on the Remembrance Stone in their honor.

The Marine Corps League Costa Rica Fellowship, established in 2010, is actively welcoming new members. The group includes veterans of the Vietnam War, Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan, as well as members of other branches of the U.S. military. Membership is also open to local law enforcement officers and first responders. Those interested in joining can find more information at the Marine Corps Warriors League Costa Rica website.

In observance of Memorial Day, the U.S. Embassy and its Consular Section in San José were closed on Monday, May 26. Regular office hours will resume Tuesday, May 27, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

At the embassy grounds, the Peace Garden was adorned in memory of those who gave their lives in service to the United States.

Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday in May. On this day, Americans traditionally visit cemeteries and memorials to pay tribute to fallen service members. Volunteers often place U.S. flags on graves at national cemeteries across the country.

The holiday's origins trace back to May 5, 1866, in Waterloo, New York. Recognized by presidential proclamation, Waterloo is considered the birthplace of Memorial Day, where citizens first began the tradition of honoring those lost in combat and decorating their graves.
