International bank approves $5.9 million cooperation for road improvements in Costa Rica

As part of the pre-investment program, the Honduras-headquartered Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Cabei) approved on Tuesday, $5.9 cooperation funds to develop studies for the repair of several roads in Costa Rica.



According to Cabei, the funds will be overseen by the Ministry of Public Transportation and will cover the cost of the studies on the projects to improve eight highways, such as:

  • The new radial road in Heredia Province.


  • The road between  Pozón and Jacó Beach in Puntarenas Province.


  • The road between Birmania and Santa Cecilia in Monteverde Canton,Puntarenas Province.


  • The Liberia Canton highway that connects to the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Guanacaste Province.


  • The intersection to Route 175 in Desamparados Canton in San José.


  • The Route 32 between Limón Beach and Sixaola Canton in Limón Province.


  • The road between San José and Caldera Beach on Route 27 in Puntarenas Province.


  • The road between Barranca Canton and Caldera Beach in Puntarenas Province.






“With the approval of this cooperation, Cabei reaffirms its commitment to developing modern road infrastructure in Costa Rica," said Cabei Director for Costa Rica Erwen Masís.



Recently, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a $515 million loan to Costa Rica as part of the economic reform agreement with the IMF.



Early this month, Costa Rica inaugurated a new highway overpass in Cartago Province.



In October, the last section of the first three-level highway was inaugurated.



The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) is a government agency responsible for planning and building roads, airports, and maritime ports and regulating public transportation.
