On Friday, the Ministry of Public Transports announced the opening to traffic on a new highway overpass in Cartago Province.

The overpass is located on a stretch of the main highway in the San Nicolás District, between the cantons of Taras and La Lima.

The bridge above the roadway is about 1.1 kilometers long and has six lanes (three in each direction).

The new overpass is part of the Route 2 Extension Project. The route is also known as Florencio del Castillo Highway which connects the provinces of San José and Cartago.

The structure's building cost was estimated at $20, and it is part of a $70 budget for Route 2 renovations.

The ministry oversees the Route 2 extension project, which is financed by an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) loan.

Following the suspension of the train between the two provinces, authorities expect that the new flyover will help speed up traffic on Route 2.

The Railway Institute has announced that train service has been suspended until the railway track can be repaired, after a landslide damaged a portion of the path near the Ochomogo Hill area.

The Cartago overpass is part of a larger infrastructure rehabilitation project underway in the country.  Recently, the last section of the first three-level highway was inaugurated.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transports (MOPT) is a government agency responsible for planning and building roads, airports, and maritime ports and regulating public transportation.
