On
Friday, the last section of the first
three-level highway, known as National
Primary Route 39, was inaugurated by the
Ministry of Public Works and Transport
(MOPT).
The
highway project was launched in 1978, but it
wasn't until the previous government of
Carlos Andrés Alvarado-Quesada, who served
as the 48th president from 2018 to 2022,
that the most significant progress on the
route was accomplished.
The
main 9.2-mile ring highway encircles the
central cantons of San José City is now open
to traffic.
It is estimated that over 60,000 vehicles use this road daily to access the cities of Uruca, Pavas, Mata Redonda, Hatillo, San Sebastián, San Francisco, Zapote, San Pedro, Mercedes, Guadalupe, Calle Blancos and León XIII. The highway is also the main connection to three vital routes such as Route 1 or the Inter-American Highway (from Panama to Nicaragua), Route 27 (between San José and Puntarenas) and Route 32 (between San José and Limón). However, certain minor tasks remain unfulfilled, such as finishing the construction of various streets in the areas around the main route, as well as completing the pipeline and electrical network on these parallel roads. Authorities expect that the project will be completed in December, according to the ministry. The Route 39 highway cost more than $230 million and was financed with a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI). The MOPT is an agency of the government in charge of roads, airports and maritime ports planning and construction. It also regulates public transportation.
