Condé Nast Traveller's 2024 Readers' Choice Awards named Costa Rica the most welcoming country in the world.

According to the British magazine, the award was established on feedback from well-traveled readers on where to find the world's most friendly people, excluding Europe.

The magazine, which has a total distribution of over 78,000 printed publications in 2023, found that Costa Rica is the winner in the friendliest category, with a score of 96.15% favorable feedback.

"Taking the top spot, Costa Rica is home to dynamic rainforests, world-class surfing, and of course, friendly people," reads the magazine. “Pura Vida, meaning pure life is their national expression, used by locals as a greeting but also as a guiding principle."

The Costa Rican lifestyle is centered around "positivity and gratitude, and this infectious optimism enriches the outlooks of visitors too," reads the publication.

"The country is a leading ecotourism destination, with 25 percent of its land protected by conservation reserves, making it a place which is kind to both the people and the planet," the magazine noted.

New Zealand came in second with a reader opinion score of 95.63%, followed by Thailand with a score of 94.37%.

The remaining top 10 readers' selections included tourist places such as Canada, Mexico, Japan, the Maldives, and the Seychelles islands, among others.

Costa Rica was named the world's happiest country in 2019 by the New Economics Foundation's Happy Planet Index.

As of August, Costa Rica's principal international airport, Juan Santamaría (SJO), served approximately 4.3 million arriving and outgoing passengers, both tourists and residents.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica. As of July, over 1.7 million tourists arrived via air, representing a 13.5% increase over the same period in 2023.

The country reported a new tourism record reached in 2023, with more than 2,4 million travelers.
