The U.S. Embassy and Consular Section in San José is closed Friday, one day ahead of the United States' Independence Day, which marks the nation's 250th anniversary this year.

The embassy announced that its offices will not provide public services on Friday because of the holiday. Regular operations are scheduled to resume Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Earlier this week, the embassy shared photos on its social media platforms from its official Independence Day reception. The event brought together embassy personnel, Costa Rican government officials, including Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar Rivera, and representatives from foreign embassies and organizations allied with the United States.

"We proudly celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Independence of the United States, a historic date that honors the values of freedom, democracy and opportunity that have guided our nation," the embassy said in a social media post. "We thank our partners, allies and friends in Costa Rica for joining us in this very special commemoration."

U.S. Ambassador Melinda Hildebrand is expected to continue the traditional Fourth of July observances Saturday by placing a floral tribute at the National Monument in San José's National Park.

The ambassador is also expected to deliver an Independence Day message through the embassy's social media channels.

The United States and Costa Rica have maintained formal diplomatic relations for 175 years. The two countries officially established diplomatic ties in 1851, following Costa Rica's independence and the dissolution of the Central American federation.

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. On that day, the Continental Congress formally declared the American colonies' independence from Great Britain, creating the foundation for the United States.

The holiday is observed each year with parades, fireworks, barbecues, family gatherings, picnics and other community celebrations across the country.

Fireworks displays are among the most recognizable traditions, with cities and towns nationwide hosting evening celebrations that light up the sky with colorful displays.

The Fourth of July is also closely associated with patriotic symbols, particularly the American flag, which is displayed on homes, businesses and public buildings throughout the country. Many Americans wear red, white and blue clothing and accessories to celebrate the occasion and express their national pride.

Beyond the festivities, Independence Day serves as a reminder of the principles on which the United States was founded, including liberty, democracy and individual rights. The holiday provides an opportunity for Americans to celebrate their shared history and reflect on the freedoms and opportunities they enjoy.

In related developments, Ambassador Melinda Hildebrand recently swore in a new group of 31 Peace Corps volunteers, who began teaching English in public schools across Costa Rica.

The initiative is part of a two-year program coordinated with Costa Rica's Ministry of Public Education (MEP) to strengthen English-language skills among students throughout the country, helping expand future academic and career opportunities.

How should the U.S. Embassy organize an Independence Day celebration for the American community living in Costa Rica?
