Regular traffic has resumed on a newly installed bridge near Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT).

The ministry said the new portable prefabricated truss structure, commonly known as a Bailey bridge, was installed on Route 1 along the section connecting El Coyol Canton in Alajuela Province with San José Province near the airport.

MOPT crews began work on the project in May, installing the bridge, which measures approximately 16 feet wide and 164 feet long. The project is expected to expand the current route between El Coyol and San José from one lane to two lanes, improving traffic flow in the area.

The bridge installation is part of a broader series of road improvement projects being carried out by MOPT across the country.  Currently, crews are working to install a bridge along a section of Route 27, which connects San José Province with Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, after a major roadway collapse damaged part of the highway.

The Route 27 collapse comes as Costa Rica continues repair work on the Tárcoles River Bridge, commonly known as theCrocodile Bridge,in Puntarenas Province. Crews are carrying out urgent structural improvements on the heavily traveled crossing.

MOPT is responsible for overseeing the country’s road, port and airport infrastructure, as well as national public transportation policy.
