Lufthansa
has expanded its nonstop service to
Costa Rica, offering five weekly
flights between Frankfurt, Germany,
and Juan Santamaría
International Airport
(SJO) in Alajuela Province, the
Tourism Institute (ICT) announced. The
German flag carrier’s first flight
featuring its Lufthansa Allegris
aircraft arrived in Costa Rica on
Tuesday night. The arrival marked a
milestone for the airline as it
commemorates its 100th anniversary,
according to the ICT. Beginning
this month, the airline operates
flights between Frankfurt
International Airport (FRA) and Juan
Santamaría International Airport (SJO)
every Monday, Wednesday, Friday,
Saturday and Sunday.

All flights use
Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft
configured to accommodate 180
passengers. According to the
ICT’s latest data, Costa Rica received
nearly 50,000 German visitors by air
from January through June, a 5% increase
from the same period a year earlier.
More than 1.6 million
travelers arrived in the country by air during the first
half of 2026,
highlighting tourism’s continued
importance to the national economy. Lufthansa
said additional information about the
expanded San José-Frankfurt service is
available on its official
website. The
expansion comes as other airlines
increase their connections to Costa
Rica. Breeze Airways recently
inaugurated its first nonstop
flight between the United States
and Costa Rica.
Costa Rica was recently promoting its
well-known “Pura Vida” motto in
Mexico as part of an effort to attract more
tourists.
The campaign aims to strengthen the
“Pura Vida” concept as a lifestyle
centered on music and nature. In a related
development, Costa Rica launched a
$13 million modernization project
at La Managua Local Airport in
Quepos Canton, Puntarenas
Province.
The project aims to improve airport
infrastructure, operational safety and
air connectivity along the country’s
Central Pacific Coast. The
ICT is the government agency
responsible for promoting Costa Rica
as a tourism destination and
supporting the country’s tourism
industry.
