The winning number for Costa Rica’s annual Christmas Lottery, known as Gordo Navideño, was No. 78 with series 714, the Social Protection Board (JPS) announced Sunday.

The top prize is valued at about $16 million. The drawing, which included roughly 150 additional prizes, was broadcast live on the state-owned Channel 13.

For each number-and-series combination, JPS printed five identical sets of 40 tickets. To win any prize, players must match both the two-digit number, ranging from 00 to 99, and the three-digit series number, from 000 to 999.

Individual tickets, known locally as pedacitos, from the winning jackpot number and series pay about $81,900.

The second prize is valued at about $1.6 million per five sets, or roughly $8,000 per ticket. That prize went to No. 59 with series 052.

The third prize is worth about $819,000 per five sets, or about $4,000 per ticket, for No. 92 with series 244.

Additional prizes range from $500 up to the top jackpot and are awarded based on other winning number-and-series combinations. A full list of winning numbers and series is available on the JPS website.

Anyone in Costa Rica, regardless of nationality, residency status, or whether they are a tourist, may buy printed lottery tickets. All prizes are paid out immediately and are tax-free at the JPS headquarters in downtown San José or at any Banco de Costa Rica branch.

Residents, including foreigners with a DIMEX residency ID, may also buy tickets online through the JPS website.  The platform allows unlimited purchases, and winnings are deposited into the registered bank account within 24 hours.

According to JPS, revenue from the lottery supports social service programs and pays fees to lottery vendors.
