The Red Cross has launched itsSafe Holiday Vacationscampaign to respond to emergencies associated with a surge in tourism during Holy Week.

The Catholic observance began Sunday, March 29, and runs through Sunday, April 5, commemorating the final days of Jesus Christ’s life, including his passion, death and resurrection.

Across the country, Holy Week is marked by religious events and cultural traditions, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to take part in one of Costa Rica’s most significant annual observances.

The period also coincides with the traditional Holy Week school break, making it one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. Many Costa Rican families travel to beaches and rural destinations, while international arrivals increase due to spring break travel.

The Red Cross said its nationwide surveillance and emergency response operation began Sunday and will continue through April 5. During that time, the organization will establish outposts in high-traffic tourist areas, including rivers, beaches and mountainous regions.

Base camps will operate 24 hours a day and will be staffed by rescuers, paramedics and trained volunteers. Teams are prepared to respond to a wide range of incidents, including traffic accidents, intoxication cases, water-related emergencies and reports of missing persons.

The operation includes 500 paramedics and volunteers, 120 emergency and rescue vehicles, 200 roadside assistance stations, 130 beach lifeguard bases and 200 mobile units deployed nationwide, officials said.

To reduce the risk of accidents during the holiday period, Red Cross officials urged tourists to follow basic safety guidelines, including:

  • Use proper equipment for adventure activities such as surfing, swimming and trekking.

  • Swim only at beaches with lifeguards and within designated safe zones to avoid rip currents.

  • Avoid areas with narrow, dark channels of water, fewer breaking waves, or debris moving out to sea.

  • Ask lifeguards about potential hazards before entering the ocean.

  • Avoid entering the water deeper than hip level.

  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher.

  • Become familiar with local traffic laws before driving.

  • Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  • Never leave children unattended.

  • In an emergency, call 911.

Officials added that travelers can take basic preventive steps to stay safe during their trips.

In related developments, Costa Rica has launched its "Safe Holy Week Police Operation," a nationwide security effort aimed at increasing surveillance during the busy holiday period.

Authorities have also increased monitoring in national parks to prevent environmental crimes.
