Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves-Robles and President-elect Laura Fernández-Delgado traveled to the United States to participate in the Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Florida.

The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, and will be led by U.S. President Donald J. Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Trump National Doral Miami Golf Resort.

Fernández, who also serves as Costa Rica’s minister of the presidency, was invited by Chaves to join the delegation. She was elected in early February as the country’s 50th president for the 2026–2030 term and is scheduled to be sworn in on May 8, beginning a four-year term through 2030.

The Costa Rican delegation also includes First Lady Signe Zeikate and Foreign Affairs Minister Arnoldo André-Tinoco.

According to the U.S. Department of State, representatives from the governments of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago are also expected to attend the summit.

“The United States will welcome the strongest like-minded allies in our hemisphere to promote freedom, security and prosperity in our region,” the U.S. Department of State said in a statement.

U.S. authorities noted the summit aims to establish a coalition of nations that will work together to advance strategies to counter foreign interference in the hemisphere, as well as criminal and narco-terrorist gangs and cartels, and illegal and mass migration.

Chaves recently said he also plans to address illegal gold mining activities primarily carried out by Nicaraguan nationals without state authorization in the Crucitas area of Alajuela province, near the border with Nicaragua.

In a recent effort to regain control of the Crucitas area and curb illegal gold mining, Costa Rica launched a demolition operation using controlled explosives to destroy tunnels and structures used for illicit activities.

Chaves also said that after the meeting in the United States, the Costa Rican delegation will travel to Chile to attend the official presidential inauguration of José Antonio Kast. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the National Congress in Valparaíso on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

Chaves and his delegation are expected to return to Costa Rica on Thursday, March 12.

Costa Rica and the United States have cooperated on several economic and political initiatives. On political matters, Costa Rica recently condemned strikes by Iran against U.S. interests in several Arab nations.
