Predominantly Catholic Costa Rica observes "All Souls’ Day," also known as the "Day of the Dead," on Nov. 2.

According to the Episcopal Conference, the country’s leading Catholic authority, some people often confuse the observance with the more colorful celebrations held in Mexico.

"All Saints’ Day" is observed on Nov. 1, followed by "Day of the Dead" on Nov. 2. “The Church remembers those who have died on both days, but with a different focus and a one-day interval between the two rites,” church officials said.

Costa Rican families traditionally attend mass and visit cemeteries on "All Saints’ Day" to place flowers and candles on the graves of loved ones. The day honors all Catholics who are believed to have reached heaven.

The following day, the "Day of the Dead," commemorates all who have passed away, including those who were not baptized or did not belong to the Catholic faith.

Many Catholics dedicate the day to prayer and reflection, remembering their departed loved ones, including those of other religions or no religion at all. Costa Ricans often spend the day praying and recalling those they have lost, regardless of their faith.

Both days are observed with solemnity and reverence in Costa Rica. However, in other countries such as Mexico, the "Day of the Dead" is marked with festive celebrations. There, families create altars at home or at gravesites, decorated with photos, candles, and the favorite foods of the deceased. Streets and houses are adorned with colorful paper, flowers, and lights to honor those who have passed.
