Costa Rica’s Central Bank (BCCR) has issued a new series of collectible coins highlighting the country’s history, culture, nature and geography, while also incorporating enhanced security features to prevent counterfeiting, authorities said.

The collection is divided into four themed groups.

The historical series features ₡500 colones (about $1) commemorating major national milestones: 200 years of independence, 175 years since the founding of the Republic of Costa Rica, 75 years since the abolition of the arm, and 200 years since the annexation of the Nicoya territory to Costa Rica.

The cultural series consists of ₡100 colones coins (about 25 cents) honoring key expressions of Costa Rican heritage. The designs highlight the popular Swing criollo dance, the Calypso rhythm from Limón, traditional “corridas de toros” festivities, Chorotega indigenous ceramics, Costa Rican cimarrona music and the traditional ox cart.

The nature collection includes six ₡50 colones coins (about 10 cents), each featuring a species that represents the country’s biodiversity: the Morpho butterfly, the red-eyed tree frog, the hawksbill sea turtle, the anole lizard, the mangrove cra, and Dice’s cottontail rabbit.

A fourth set, featuring ₡25 colones coins (about 5 cents), honors Costa Rica’s seven provinces: San José, Cartago, Alajuela, Heredia, Guanacaste, Puntarenas and Limón.

The Central Bank issued about 16,000 special collector units presented in acrylic display cases. Prices range from $16 to $18, depending on the type of case.

The collectible coins are available for purchase at various locations, including the Central Bank, National Bank of Costa Rica, the Popular Bank of Costa Rica, the Gold Museum and BAC San José offices nationwide, among others.

A full list of financial institutions offering collectible coins is available on the Central Bank’s website.

The BCCR provides banking services to the government and financial institutions, issues domestic currency, regulates commercial banks and other financial institutions, offers economic guidance, conducts research, and publishes monetary and other economic statistics.
