The
Social Security system (CCSS) is launching
a large-scale mammography screening
campaign in Heredia Province aimed at
improving the early detection of breast
cancer.
Health
experts consider mammography one of the
most effective methods for early breast
cancer detection, particularly among women
ages 40 to 75 and those at higher risk of
developing the disease.
In
addition to detecting cancer, mammograms
can help identify noncancerous conditions,
including cysts and benign tumors.
The campaign is being conducted at the Social Security public clinic (known as Ebais) in Puerto Viejo District, Sarapiquí Canton. The initiative begins this week and will continue through July 10. Mammography services will be available from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Clinic staff
expect to assist approximately 1,000
patients previously assigned to the
facility. Officials are contacting
eligible individuals using information
in the Social Security registration
system to schedule appointments.
Residents of
Sarapiquí who are not registered with
Costa Rica's Social Security system but
have pending mammography exams are also
eligible to receive the screening free
of charge.
The initiative is
one of several large-scale public health
campaigns launched by Social Security
this year. Most recently, the
country began its annual influenza
vaccination campaign, with health
authorities expecting approximately
1.5 million people to receive flu
shots.
CCSS is the State-run organization responsible for Costa Rica’s public health system.
