The Social Security Fund (CCSS) will begin its annual influenza vaccination campaign, with an estimated 1.5 million people expected to receive the flu shot this year.

Influenza is a common viral respiratory illness that spreads easily through human contact. Symptoms often begin suddenly and may include chills, muscle aches, sore throat, fatigue and high fever.

In some cases, the flu can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and, in severe instances, death, even among otherwise healthy individuals. The virus can survive on surfaces for up to three days and is transmitted primarily through touch.

The flu vaccine has been distributed annually since 2004 as part of a nationwide public health effort. Beginning Monday, April 27, the vaccine will be available at all public hospitals and community health clinics, known as Ebais, across the country.

The campaign prioritizes vulnerable populations, including legal foreign residents with a valid DIMEX identification card.

Eligible groups include:

  • Children ages 6 months to 8 years.

  • Individuals ages 8 to 57 with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease and respiratory illnesses.

  • Adults 58 and older.

  • Pregnant women.

Frontline and essential workers are also included, such as health care professionals, Red Cross responders, firefighters and employees of key government institutions, including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Public Education, Ministry of Public Security, the General Directorate of Migration and municipal governments.

Health authorities are encouraging eligible individuals to contact their nearest public health clinic to receive the vaccine and help prevent the spread of the virus.

People who are not part of the prioritized groups, regardless of their Social Security affiliation status, must purchase the flu shot through private pharmacies. The vaccine costs approximately $25 per dose this season.

The influenza campaign is one of several public health initiatives underway. This week, authorities also launched a nationwide vaccination campaign against the respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, targeting pregnant women.

CCSS is the State-run organization responsible for Costa Rica’s public health system.
