The
Electricity Institute (ICE) has opened the
country’s first large-scale electric
vehicle (EV) charging station, featuring
six fast chargers and a suite of
amenities, a milestone for advancing
electric mobility in Costa Rica.
Located
at the
ICE facilities in Villa Bonita canton in
Alajuela province,
the station is reportedly the first of its
kind in Central America, according to authorities. The
facility includes
state-of-the-art fast chargers for quicker, more
efficient vehicle recharging, as
well as a
coffee shop and internet access, creating a
fully integrated experience for EV users.
With the new station, ICE now operates 43 fast chargers nationwide. The institute plans to add six more in 2025 and at least ten in 2026 in locations including Liberia in Guanacaste; Guápiles and Puerto Viejo in Limón; Garabito, Palmar Norte, and Ciudad Neilly in Puntarenas; and San Pérez Zeledón in San José. These additions will further strengthen Costa Rica’s largest EV charging network.
“These
investments align with our corporate
strategy and sustainability goals,”
said Marco Acuña, ICE president. “They
reinforce our commitment to
electrifying the economy, supporting
the energy transition, reducing
emissions, and strengthening our
energy generation matrix.”
In
related topics, ICE recently
announced plans for Costa Rica to
connect to a next-generation
submarine cable system,
which is expected to
significantly boost the nation’s
internet capacity and international
connectivity.
Founded in 1949, ICE is Costa Rica’s state-owned electricity and telecommunications provider.
