Canada Day, observed annually on July 1, marks the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation, which took place in 1867. It is a federal holiday celebrated by Canadians at home and abroad.

In observance of the holiday, the Embassy of Canada and its Consular Section in Costa Rica were closed on Monday, one day ahead of the official Canada Day. Regular public services will resume on Tuesday, July 1, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

To mark the occasion, the Canadian Embassy hosted an early Canada Day celebration on June 17. During the event, Ambassador Ioanna Sahas Martin delivered remarks to embassy staff, Costa Rican government representatives, and some members of the Canadian community in Costa Rica.

Canada Day commemorates the unification of the colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single Dominion within the British Empire, as established by the Constitution Act of 1867.

Canadians living abroad are encouraged to join the celebrations through a live broadcast on Tuesday, July 1, organized by Canadian Heritage, a federal organization dedicated to promoting the country’s cultural, civic, and economic life.

“On July 1, get caught up in the excitement and energy of the Canada Day celebrations in Canada’s Capital Region! Whether with family or friends, take part in this free event that showcases our country’s diversity, music and culture,” the organization said in a public statement.

The national celebrations begin with the Daytime Ceremony from noon to 1 p.m. Eastern Time (ET), featuring a reflection on Canada’s past, present, and future. The program highlights important national anniversaries and themes and includes a special Royal Canadian Air Force Centennial Flypast.

The event will be streamed live starting at 11:30 a.m. ET on: CBC Television, ICI Télé, ICI RDI, CBC Gem, ICI TOU.TV (French only), and Radio-Canada.ca (French only).

From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET, the Evening Show will showcase a two-hour concert from Canada’s capital. The live event features musical performances in rock, pop, hip-hop, and folk, uniting artists from across the country.

The show will be broadcast live on: CBC Television, ICI Télé, CBC Gem, ICI TOU.TV (French only), and Radio-Canada.ca (French only).

The day’s festivities will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display at 10 p.m. ET. Viewers can watch the show live via the Canadian Heritage YouTube channel, CBC News Network, and ICI RDI.
