Jailed suspects of bank robbery
attempted in Heredia

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

On Monday, officers from the Sarapiquí police station arrested five men on suspicion of attempting to rob a bank.

According to the police report, the men arrived on a motorcycle at the bank located in the community of Finca Seis de Río Frío in Sarapiquí Canton, Heredia Province.

They tried to block the bank's two main doors with their motorcycles, but the bank's private security officer tried to stop them from entering. At that moment apparently, they shoot and kill him.

As they attempted to flee the scene, after they couldn't get inside the bank, they were intercepted by the police officers who were near the place.

Suspects began shooting at officers, injuring one.

When the men arrived near a river they left their motorcycles on the shore and tried to cross the river, but were arrested by the police on the other side.

One of the suspects arrested is a 17-year-old whose name was not provided by the police. The other four suspects were identified with the surnames Velásquez, 20, Serrano, 26, González, 21, and Villalobos, 29.

Allegedly, during the failed escape the men threw three pistols into the bushes, which were found by the police after arresting the suspects.

The four men and one minor were taken to the cells of the Public Ministry where they were interrogated by the judicial agents and must wait until a judge orders the pre-trial measures against them: attempted robbery, attempt to murder the police officers and suspects of killing the bank guard officer.
