The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in union with the Foundation for Peace and Democracy (FUNPADEM) calls for the prohibition of the use of Lethal Autonomous Weapons ( or LAWs).

LAWs are a type of autonomous military system that can independently search for and engage targets based on programmed constraints and descriptions. LAWs are also known as lethal autonomous weapon systems, autonomous weapon systems, robotic weapons, killer robots or slaughter bots.

"Such robot machines have the ability to kill without the need for human participation," the ministry said in its statement.

"The existence of machines with the capacity to take lives, now even without human participation, is unacceptable, and must be addressed in a comprehensive manner, understanding the conjunctures and structures that support it and give it life," said Jairo Vargas, the Vice Minister of Peace.

Specialists consider it important to promote meaningful human control over autonomous weapons and the inability of technology to make decisions based on ethics and morality.

According to the ministry, the agreed creation of an international law that prohibits fully autonomous lethal weapons systems is unavoidable and is necessary to join forces from governments and civil society to achieve this goal before it is too late for humanity.
