New ICUs open for covid-19 patients

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The San Vicente de Paul Public Hospital in Heredia Province enabled a new Intensive Care Unit, (ICU) specifically for covid-19 patients in delicate health conditions.

Set up on the third floor of the hospital, the new ICU consists of 14 beds, equipment, supplies and the respective specialists for intensive care. Including medical equipment: such as monitors and ventilators, which are necessary for the care of patients in this type of unit.

The ICU already has nine patients. In the coming weeks, the hospital will provide 36 more beds for the care of covid-19 patients. Social Security said, the additional beds are only for those cases classified with the disease as mild and moderate level.

As the third floor of the hospital continues to receive covid-19 patients, the rest of the hospital remains open to the sick living in the province. But, before the specialized floor could open to the public, changes had to be made within the hospital for safety. The surgery, gynecology and obstetrics services were redistributed to the fourth floor.

Since the government declared a State of National Health Emergency in March to contain the spread of the virus, one of their most notable actions was for Social Security to provide free medical attention to covid-19 patients throughout the country.

According to the most up-to-date report from the Ministry of Health, on Thursday afternoon, the covid-19 continues infecting and causing more deaths in the country.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Ministry of Health provided the following statistics on the status of the virus in the country:

826 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 17,445 active cases. Which is a 66% active patients rate. The ages of patients infected range from a three-month-old baby to a 100-year-old person.

6,786 foreign-born people have been infected of the 26,129 cases since March, approximately 26% of the total cases.

• 369 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 95 patients are in Intensive Care Units with delicate health conditions, 274 patients are in recovery rooms. Most of the infected patients are quarantined in their homes.

• 8,412 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 32% recovery rate.

• 73,577 people have been ruled out.

• 112,296 medical covid-19 tests have been made.

272 deaths of patients infected with covid-19 since March. Which is a 1% death rate. Of these 99 were women and 173 men. The ages range from 23 to a 99-year-old person.

On July 30, authorities reported 30 foreign-born people had died from covid-19 since March, at the time it was 22% of virus-related deaths. However, the ministry confirmed that they will not continue providing information on the number of foreign-born people who die from covid-19 in the country.

Readers can see the updated number of total patients in each district at the National Distance Education University on its
Covid-19 Map.

As of Thursday night, the pandemic has killed 749,372
patients worldwide, according to recent statistics reported by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
