25 years in jail for a man
guilty of killing tourist

Nicaraguan man surnamed Díaz-Hawkings, 35, was found guilty by the Pococí Deputy Prosecutor's Office of the following crimes: homicide and attempted rape of a Spanish citizen tourist surnamed Gutiérrez- López. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Also, the Criminal Court sentenced Díaz to pay ¢125 million (approximately $210,181) in damages.

According to the information provided by the Prosecutor's Office, the  crime happened on August 4, 2018, in Tortuguero Beach in Limón Province, when the victim went out for an early morning run in the area near her hotel.

"The evidence presented against the man proves that he intercepted her and committed the crimes,"the Prosecutor's Office said in its statement.

They proved that the woman did not return to the hotel room where she was staying, her husband went out to look for her, instead found her lifeless body.

Biological fluids were found in the victim’s body belonging to the suspect, which led to his arrest by the judicial police following orders from the Prosecutor's Office.

Diaz was detained in 2018, since then a judge of the Court of Justice ordered pre-trial prison. The man will continue in prison until the sentence is final. Then, the jail period ordered by the judge begins for being found guilty of the crimes of homicide and attempted rape.
