New ban on driving in Orange Alert
zones for the rest of the month

The government has relaxed regulations in the so-called Orange and Yellow Alert zones.

The following is an updated list of cantons and districts declared as Orange Alert by the National Emergency Commission:

• In San José Province: Alajuelita, Aserrí, Curridabat, Desamparados, Escazú, Goicoechea, Montes de Oca, Moravia, San José downtown, Santa Ana, Tibás and Vázquez de Coronado

• In Alajuela Province: Alajuela downtown, and Naranjo

• In Cartago Province: La Unión

• In Heredia Province: Barva, Flores, Heredia downtown, San Isidro, San Pablo and Santo Domingo.

• In Puntarenas Province: Corredores, the districts Agua Buena and Sabalito in Coto Brus, the Pavón District in Golfito, the districts of Barranca and Chacarita.

In the Orange Alert zone, Closing Phase and the Opening Phase apply on different dates in August.

Closing Phase applies from today Monday, Aug. 10 to Friday, Aug. 21. And for the rest of the month, Opening Phase will be put in place.

During the Closing Phase period, the week-days driving hours in Orange Alert zones were extended from Monday to Friday, 5 a.m. at 9 p.m. After 9 p.m. vehicles are not allowed on the roads.

On Saturdays and Sundays, drivers are ALLOWED to be on the road between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. And after 7 p.m. vehicles are not allowed on the roads.

Vehicles ALLOWED on the road also depend on the last number of its plate. The following is a list of cars able to be on the road depending their license plate number:

• On Monday, plates ending in 1 or 2.

• On Tuesday,  plates ending in 3 or 4.

• On Wednesday,  plates end at 5 or 6.

• On Thursday,  plates ending at 7 or 8.

• On Friday plates,  ending in 9 or 0.

• On Saturday, plate numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9.

• On Sunday, plates ending in numbers 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.

Driving regulations will change during Opening Phase, from Aug. 22 to Aug. 30. Vehicles NOT ALLOWED to be on the road are according to the last number of its plate are:

• On Monday,  plates ending in 1 or 2.

• On Tuesday,  plates ending in 3 or 4.

• On Wednesday,  plates end at 5 or 6.

• On Thursday,  plates ending at 7 or 8.

• On Friday,  plates ending in 9 or 0.

• On Saturday, plate numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.

• On Sunday, plates ending in numbers 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9.
