Costa Rica staff Following the most recent regulations ordered by the government to try to contain the spread of covid-19 throughout the country, commercial activity has been regulated in two types of areas, Orange Alert and Yellow Alert. In the case of the areas declared as Orange Alert, two phases of periods have been established, which affect the business hours. Closing Phase applies from today Monday, Aug. 10 to Friday, Aug. 21. And for the rest of the month, the Opening Phase will apply. Businesses may continue with their activities during the Closing Phase period, but may only serve the public from Monday to Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. On weekends, Saturdays and Sundays, customer service hours are limited from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. Specifically, " on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16, they will only be able to continue with their business operations throughout the country, businesses selling food, beverages, groceries, cleaning and hygiene supplies, and basic needs," the government said in its statement. The rest of the days in the Closing Phase, businesses can serve clients, as long as the sanitary guidelines ordered by the Ministry of Health are applied. It is recommended that a representative of each company consult with the Ministry of Health, following regulations for more information applying specifically to their business by calling (506) 2223-0333. In general, the government authorizes commercial activities in supermarkets, grocery stores, restaurants, cafeterias, food courts, shops, beauty salons, barbershops, home delivery sales, drive-through food sales, all public institutions, municipalities, post offices, shipments, clinics, pharmacies, hospitals, laboratories, emergency services, optical, veterinary clinics, hardware stores, locksmiths, rent a car, garages, gas station, among others. The so-called feria del agricultor, or farmer’s markets, are allowed to open. These must provide a special schedule for senior citizens from 5 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Reopening for businesses located in Orange Alert zones during the Closing Phase can be reached at the government Covid-Alerts site in Spanish. The updated list of cantons and districts under Orange Alert are: • In San José Province: Alajuelita, Aserrí, Curridabat, Desamparados, Escazú, Goicoechea, Montes de Oca, Moravia, San José downtown, Santa Ana, Tibás and Vázquez de Coronado • In Alajuela Province: Alajuela downtown, and Naranjo • In Cartago Province: La Unión • In Heredia Province: Barva, Flores, Heredia downtown, San Isidro, San Pablo and Santo Domingo. • In Puntarenas Province: Corredores, the districts Agua Buena and Sabalito in Coto Brus, the Pavón District in Golfito, the districts of Barranca and Chacarita. The rest of the country remains under the Yellow Alert regulations.
