Published Wednesday, August 19, 2020 $300,000-plus allocated for
17 outdoor gyms By the A.M. Costa Rica staff With a budget of $323,989, the Institute of Sports (ICODER) will build 17 outdoor gyms in various communities in the country. That is an average investment of $19,000 per outdoor gymnasium. The outdoor gym is a gym built outside in a public park, with the all-weather construction of its exercise machines somewhat modeled on playground equipment. According to the institute, the contracted company CICADEX must, within 90 business days, build the gyms in the communities of Isla Venado, Lepanto, Rio Cuarto, Bribri-Talamanca, Coto Brus, Nicoya, Osa, Cañas , Garabito, Dota, Naranjo, Parque La Expresión Laguna de Doña Ana in Paraíso, Oreamuno, La Guácima de Alajuela, Cervantes, Santo Domingo and Moravia. The outdoor gym, or so-called BioHealthy Parks, includes the installation of 13 exercise machines. The goal is to offer a free public outdoors area to the community as an effort to reduce a sedentary lifestyle. These outdoor gyms are considered a free, accessible, safe and effective option to address a national public health problem that has been proven and affects a high percentage of the Costa Rican population, the institute said in its statement. The most vulnerable populations to covid-19 are those sedentary and with some degree of obesity, which carry a series of diseases, such as diabetes or blood pressure, among others, and hence the importance of carrying these options (to exercise) to the communities," said Alba Quesada Rodríguez, Director of the institute. According to the ICODER, since 2016, 68 outdoor gyms have been installed in several communities in the country. However, due to restrictions on access to public parks to contain the spread of the covid-19, all outdoor gyms are closed. ------------------------------ Should the institute first develop a sanitary guideline to allow the reopening of outdoor gyms?
