$280,000-plus for sidewalks on popular crocodile’s river

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

An investment of $283,041, from the Ministry of Public Works, seeks to give more security to the pedestrians who make the tourist stop to watch crocodiles from the bridge over the Tárcoles River in Puntarenas.

According to authorities of the National Road Council, the new sidewalks on both sides of the bridge will have a width of 1.2 meters, which will even allow the passage of people in wheelchairs. Also, railings will be placed on both sides of those sidewalks to protect pedestrians.

Among the improvements, vehicular traffic will be isolated from pedestrian traffic, using a New Jersey-type concrete barrier. Also on the other side of the sidewalk a metal rail will be placed, to reduce the risks of people falling into the riverbed, from above, said the ministry.

During the execution of these works, some occasional regulated steps have been carried out, during the demolishing of the old concrete barriers and sidewalk.

According to the ministry, work on the the bridge is done during every day, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Authorities expected to inaugurate the new sidewalks in March.

This improvement work on the bridge's sidewalks is being done in response to an order from the Constitutional Court.

In September 2019, a judge of the Constitutional Chamber ordered the ministry to present a list of the actions that have been developed to "protect the lives of people who visit the bridge to observe the crocodiles."

The court also ordered the ministry authorities to take the necessary measures to safeguard life and the physical integrity of pedestrians and drivers that go across that bridge.

According to the Tourism Institute on its Visit Costa Rica site the bridge over the Tárcoles River is a mandatory stop for tourists  wishing to visit the central Pacific.

In the article "Things to do in the Central Pacific" published on the site, the river is one if the listed options as "here you can observe a host of crocodiles, some even measure up to 3 meters long, this river is one of the most densely populated by these reptiles worldwide," said the article. "The crocodiles can be seen from the bridge over the River Tárcoles."
