donates $7.5 million
for research By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the donation of $7.5 million from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Costa Rica, which will be used for two research projects that are being developed at the University of Costa Rica. According to the ministry, from this donation, $4.5 million will be used to finance the Helice project. Helice is being developed at the university and aims to increase national competitiveness and productivity through technology and innovation. The Helice-UCR project agreement was signed in January 2019 and has the goal of developing eco-sustainable, modern and functional products and services. With the help of the donation, a building to relocate the scientists in charge of research and develop the projects of robotics, microbiology, among others, will be built. The second part of the donation, which is equivalent to $3 million, will be used by the Costa Rican Metrology Laboratory, also located in the University, to promote innovation and support university students in developing research in measurements for their graduations. According to the ministry, Sugnam Choi, director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency, known as KOICA, announced that Korea will have a more extensive budget to promote volunteering and technical cooperation projects. According to the ministry, the next meeting will be February with the representatives of Korea to create procedures to make cooperation between the two countries more effective. ![]() In August 2019, the Ministry of Environment announces the signing of an agreement between Costa Rica and Korea for the protection of forests. The agreement was signed by the Costa Rican minister, Carlos Manuel Rodríguez and the Korean minister, Jae Hyun Kim. According to the Ministry, the agreement is for cooperation between both countries to exchange knowledge related to forest development. "It is a commitment to recover the forest of each country and to consolidate a sustainable development model with low emissions," said minister Rodríguez. According to the ministry, the agreement is valid for three years, automatically renewable for additional years. Also, the ministry announced the signing of four contracts with farmers from the San Carlos area for environmental services. Payment of environmental services applies when a farmer's commitment to protect and increase the forest on his/her property, in exchange for receiving a bonus, or payment, from the Government. "The bonus is paid in parts, during a period between 3 to 5 years, per amounts between $2,624 to $8,748," said the ministry in its statement.
