Electric power has
been enabled for the first
time in the rural town of Asunción, located in the
Matama District of Limón Province, the
Electricity Institute (ICE) announced.
Electricity was brought to 20 homes as
part of the Public Electricity in Rural
Zones Program (PER). The project
required the installation of 3.5 miles
of electrical wiring, 25 concrete poles,
and 10 transformers.
The total project cost was approximately $590,000. Of that amount, $487,000 was funded by the Rural Development Institute (INDER), with the remaining costs covered by ICE’s budget.
According
to the Public Services Regulatory
Authority (ARESEP), Costa Rica’s
national power grid now reaches 99% of
the country’s territory. This
expansion forms part of a broader
national initiative to modernize
electrical infrastructure in rural and
coastal regions. Similar
improvements were recently
implemented in Puntarenas
Province. ICE,
the state-owned provider of
electricity and telecommunications,
continues working
to expand
reliable energy access throughout the
country. INDER,
also a state-run entity, leads
infrastructure development efforts in
rural areas nationwide.
